What is domestic violence? According to justice.gov “Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone.” (Domestic Violence, 2014, January 1).
Domestic violence can be anything from Physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, economic abuse or physical abuse.
What is physical abuse- physical abuse is hitting, pushing, biting, smacking, pushing or causing physical harm to someone.
What is sexual abuse- Sexual abuse is when someone is tries to engage in sexual actives without the other parties consent this would include; rape, touching someone in inappropriate places or in an inappropriate way.
What is Emotional abuse- emotional abuse is telling someone they are ugly, saying hurtful things, name calling, making someone feel worthless, attacking their self-esteem or self- worth. Economic abuse is controlling someone’s money, withholding a person money.
The efforts to eliminate domestic violence continue be ongoing and affect one in
four women throughout the United States. Domestic violence is often perpetrated
by a former spouse or boyfriend. While many women continue to be abused at the
hands of a current spouse or boyfriend many women and children continue to be
victimized or even killed once the woman attempts to leave or is in the process
of leaving. There are reports daily of men who have either killed or attempted
to kill their spouses, children and themselves. Recognizing the signs and
getting help could save many lives.
